With the job market unstable and the economy even worse, many American and Canadian workers chose the forgo using their paid vacation time. A recent survey by Right Management reports that 70% of employees said that they would not use all of their paid vacation time, while only 30% would. Why would anyone decide not to use their paid days off of work?   The instability of the job market and economy is likely the number one concern. Many workers believe that taking too much time off would put their job at risk or that they would fall behind in their tasks. Rather than taking a chance of getting fired, they would prefer to skip the paid time off. Likewise, the poor economy has made it difficult for people to spend money to travel, even on cheap vacations. Instead, they choose to save their money, in case they do get laid off. What is even more unsettling is the recent policy change, where companies are refusing to allow their employees’ vacation days to carry over to the following year. This means that vacations isn’t just skipped, it’s gone forever. Sure, there are some companies that actually compensate employees who don’t take paid time off, but these honorable businesses are becoming sparse. So what is to be done?
